What are Betta Choice Jack Leaves?

Jack Leaves are just one of many botanicals harvested and packaged by industry experts Betta Choice. They come from the Kathal Tree, or Jack Tree, and are known for their anti-microbial properties. Like other botanicals, Jack Leaves gently lower the pH of aquarium water, secrete natural tanning agents, and improve the overall heath and vitality of freshwater fish.

Jack Leaves are particularly popular amongst shrimp keepers as they provide a lot of surface area for the development of nutritious biofilms. They also tend to last a little longer than other leaves, like Mulberry Leaves and Catappa Leaves. Like these other botanicals, Jack Leaves will stain your aquarium water brown and create a wild-like environment that your shrimps and freshwater fish will love.

Key Features:

  • Gently decrease pH, making water more suitable for certain species

  • Give your aquarium a natural ‘blackwater’ look that simulates wild-like conditions

  • Supply important humins (organic compounds) that plants use to grow

  • Tanning agents released have anti-microbial properties, promoting better health and vitality

  • Provide huge surface area for nutritious biofilm development

  • Great for shrimp breeding set-ups and display aquariums

How do I use Jack Leaves in an aquarium?

Prior to placing Jack Leaves in your aquarium, it’s a good idea to boil them in fresh water. This will remove any lingering bacteria and waterlog them, increasing the chances that they’ll sink when you finally add them to your aquarium.

After boiling your Jack Leaves, strain them and then add them to your aquarium. If pre-boiled, or left for a day or two, the Jack Leaves will sink and start to release humins and tanning agents.

As natural products, Jack Leaves won’t last forever and after three to five weeks they will start to break down and lose their effectiveness. It’s recommended that you replace your Jack Leaves once they start to break down. This pack contains approximately 20 leaves.
